European Project Talk

CENRAL Project: by Dr. Suepphong Chernbumroong

The European Project discussions were a huge hit with the audience. The following were the topics: Dr. Suepphong Chernbumroong, a lecturer at Chiang Mai University, provided the objectives and a detailed explanation for the central project. Questions like, “What is the project about/how did it come about?” How has the project been carried out? In Chiang Mai, how is it used? Central’s goal is to create and implement academic curricula and instruction with a focus on content that prepares students to perform in a globalized context, and that is intended for both local and international students. Central aims to improve students’, graduates’, and research staff’s job prospects, internationalization, and collaborative engagement. The Digital Talent Academy was established as part of the central project, where master’s degree students can showcase what they are learning and help others understand the foundation of their research. Finally, he mentioned that this is Central’s final year and how Chiang Mai intends to continue the project long after it is completed.

SUNSpACe Project: by Dr. Pradorn Sureephong

Dr. Pradorn Sureephong, Associate Professor at Chiang Mai University and Local Coordinator for the SUNSpACe project, Sustainable Development Smart Agriculture Capacity, discussed the Chiang Mai University pilot, which uses smart farming to support organic farming. It is a mobile smart farm lab that serves as a training site for farmers. The goal is to share and train farmers in Chiang Mai on how to use smart farming technology. We also teach them how to create a production plan, how to produce products using technology, agricultural standards, and how to create a marketing plan. Finally, he mentioned that the project is in its final year and how it will be continued once it is completed.

DigiHealth Project:  by Mr. Suwit Wongsila

What is the project/how did it come about?
This project is called “Digihealth Capacity Building for Digital Health Monitoring and Care Systems in Asia,” and we decided to take on this project because chronic and lifestyle-related diseases are the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. These diseases are responsible for nearly one-third of all global deaths. Three Asian partner countries, Pakistan, Mongolia, and Thailand aim to create a digital health care framework that will assist doctors, practitioners, engineers, and other stakeholders in raising public awareness of these diseases and preventing them through early detection. The major chronic diseases are cardiovascular, diabetes, and mobility disorders, which account for more than 70% of deaths and share multiple risk factors.
The primary goal of this project is to develop a specialized price-based graduate course in artificial intelligence in collaboration with European and Asian partners. DigiHealth-Asia will benefit the elderly by developing self-monitoring and diagnostic tools that will improve their quality of life through the use of sensors and machine learning technologies.

How has the project been implemented
Through pilot use cases, this project aims to design and implement the framework as well as demonstrate the usefulness of an independent in-home monitoring system at partner health-care facilities and to create and deploy ICT-based digital healthcare solutions that will usher in a new era in the operation of Asian healthcare systems. We intend to implement a solution based on the use of cutting-edge digital technologies to create smart environments capable of individually monitoring health signals and analyzing patient activities. Such digitally enabled smart environments enable patients to live more independently while also providing healthcare professionals with much-needed real-time medical data. However, in order for this vision to be realized, we must first train a new generation of creative, entrepreneurial, and innovative task force members who can understand interdisciplinary ICT and digital health issues and propose effective responses. Only by developing a new curriculum in these HEI countries will this be possible. This is how the project is currently being carried out. We are currently in our second year of the project and are finalizing our specialized courses, which will be implemented in the second academic semester of the Thai academic year.

How is it used in Chiang Mai?
Chiang Mai focuses on Pilot Case 2, Remote Mobility Disorder of the Elderly. We conducted extensive research and discovered that many of the elderly, particularly those living in rural areas, are suffering the most. We’ve decided to focus on the elderly and provide them with much-needed assistance. Due to limited funds for increasing the number of healthcare practitioners, the Thai government is looking for a new way to care for its people, particularly those who live a long distance from their town. As a result, the proposed healthcare technology will benefit the targeted group of medical practitioners and young students who will become healthcare professionals. The Maharajah Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital, which is part of Chiang Mai University’s Faculty of Medicine, has long served as a major medical facility in the region. It provides medical treatment and assistance to patients who are unable to pay their medical bills. The faculty medical school now operates a number of medical facilities and has launched several of the new initiatives to fulfill three core missions: healthcare delivery, research, and education. As part of an initiative to tailor medical services to the needs of Thailand’s elderly population, healthcare services for the elderly are provided. Because the medical school’s healthcare services are used by a large number of elderly people, sample data can be collected, and new methods of monitoring and diagnostics can be developed that are specifically for them.
